After retirement, I walk in my neighborhood regularly. The first couple of blocks are usually great, but as soon as I get out into higher-traffic areas, I often run into litter on the ground. I always pick it up if I am near a trash can, and it doesn’t look too, uh…moist.
But why not be more efficient about it? Here’s the plan:
- Buy a litter picker-upper tool
- Carry a bag to collect the litter until the next public trash can
- Buy an orange jump suit, just like county jail inmates wear
- Stencil “Work Release” on the back of the orange jump suit, to signify that I’m a retired volunteer
Sporting this rig, I could roam the neighborhood with other civic-minded retirees, making it better for all of us. Perhaps even inspiring other, distant retirees to volunteer and beautify their own neighborhoods.
